Would i be going a little TOO far?

so i met this guy who is really good friends with the group of friends i hang with. he goes to a different school though. i met him once in person at a groupie hang out. and i got his number and i really wanna text him(: should i text him: hey<3 or is it weird with a heart?? a lot of my girl friends text him with hearts... i want to also... but would it be weird if i don't know him that well? or could i start that up so than he feels comfortable doing that too (:
